Burgers, ah burgers. We all have our idea of what a perfect burger is like. Pretzel bun or kaiser roll? Ketchup or mustard? Beef or turkey (or antelope)?
Recently I made a burger that, to me, was the perfect at home burger. It was just right for ME and had everything I wanted on it (or at least what could fit between two buns). Rahul is the real burger enthusiast in our home, though, so he and I wrote down what each of us believe are our favorite toppings.
Obviously not all of these toppings would be on one burger. Or would they? Hmm….
Things I like:
- Thick cut bacon (and a lot of it)
- Crispy, fresh pickled cukes and jalapenos
- Mayo remixes (Sriracha, mustard, garlic, etc)
- Coleslaw or pickled slaw
- Cheese, but not too much
- Crispy fried onions
- Sauteed mushrooms
- Roasted or grilled peppers
Things Rahul likes (which explains why he loves burgers so much):
- BBQ sauce
- Onion Rings
- French Fries
- Pickled Onions
- Caramelized Onions
- Raw Onions
- Grilled Peppers
- Any kind of cheese
- Other meats such as bacon, ham, pulled pork
- Nacho cheese sauce
- Potato Chips
The list goes on. “You could probably put asparagus on a burger and it would be good,” says Rahul, who hates asparagus. “The only thing that doesn’t belong on a burger is a soggy bun.” I agree. Buns should stand up to the burger, soaking up the burger juices and holding up to the condiments.
My ultimate burger is comprised of bacon, an all beef patty, lettuce, mushrooms, Sriracha mayonnaise, thick cut bacon, and a roasted red pepper slice on soft but sturdy buns. In the photo below you can see brioche buns, which weren’t the best for this burger because they were so dense it was difficult to bite into. They should have been softer. Here’s what it looked like:
Rahul has yet to make his ultimate burger for SGE so that recipe will be coming soon. I have a feeling it will be an affair to remember, something that you might have to eat with a fork and knife because it will have so much stuff on it. But there’s nothing wrong with that.
In the mean time, I’d like for YOU to share what your idea of an ultimate burger would be in the comments. Anything goes – it could be a breakfast burger, chicken burger, pizza burger or comprised of a different “meat.” Don’t worry, I’m not in it to steal your idea and call it my own. Instead I’m more interested in reading all of the different ways in which we create burgers and what they mean to us individually. Tell me about the toppings, how it is prepared, the first time you ate it, and why you give it the grand title of “ultimate burger!”
