Northside Kitchenette is a breakfast and lunch gem is hidden away behind The Northside Social, it’s big brother, at 65th and Keystone in Indianapolis.
My brother picked this place – she and my mom came up to Indianapolis for the library book sale and for some shopping.
While occupying a fairly small place, holding no more than 20 tables, Northside Kitchenette makes you feel like you scoped out a hidden sandwich place that nobody else knows about. However, it was packed at noon on Saturday, so I’m a little late to the game on getting over to this restaurant.
The extensive sandwich menu covered everything from open-face brisket manhattans to chicken salad, burgers, and Cubans.
I was torn between the soup and sandwich combo or a whole sandwich. The House-Made Creamy Portabella Mushroom Brandy Soup sounded so delicious, I just couldn’t pass it up. So I got a whole sandwich AND soup. It was cold outside and I really wanted something warm to eat. It came accompanied with a cheesy crostini, perfect for dipping into the soup.
Slightly sweet, probably from the brandy, but thin and light, perfectly slurpable. The mushrooms varied in size but kept their crunch and flavor. I will be back for more of this.
When I saw the Bronx Bomber on the menu, I knew I had to get it. Rarely am I presented with the chance to enjoy a corned beef sandwich. I’ll always compare one to the mile-high corned beef on rye that you can get at Shapiro’s – you just can’t beat it. This sandwich layered corned beef, pastrami, and bacon with tomato, lettuce, and mayo on toasted rye bread was a great adaptation to the idolised Shapiro’s sandwich, and definitely something I would get again. The potato chips were freshly cut and fried, similar to the Hoosier Fries that I get at the Covered Bridge Festival, and the pickle had a tart bite from the vinegar of an unmistakably homemade pickling process.
Service at the Northside Kitchenette was a step above most restaurants, where servers were knowledgeable about the menu and eager to provide suggestions. Both my mom and sister were pleased with their meals. I definitely want to get back here with Rahul to try the Brisket Manhattan and the Roast Beef Sandwich, or maybe venture off to their breakfast menu.
