Let’s be “food blogger” honest for a minute.
I, too, want quick, easy meals that don’t have 50 ingredients or require half a day to make. That just isn’t REAL for this family.
This recipe isn’t mind-blowing, nor is it probably the best thing you’ve ever eaten, and that’s OK. I want you to take the idea of french bread pizzas and run with it. There are so many possibilities for turning this idea into something that your family will enjoy.
The idea first came to me through Emeril Lagasse. In his Kicked-Up Sandwiches cookalong, I made his version of French Bread Pizza Sandwiches and they were delicious. His secret? Garlic butter slathered onto the bread prior to assembling the pizzas. I skipped that step this time because, while it did create a juicy, flavorful bread, it isn’t necessary to make great french bread pizzas.
From start to finish, these easy French bread pizzas will take less than 20 minutes. I stayed traditional by using marinara sauce, pepperoni, and sausage, but you could try…
Barbecue chicken with red onions
Caramelized onions and mushrooms
Piled high with veggies and cheese
Just a few ideas for you there. I plan on making these pizzas with a variety of different toppings anytime I need a quick meal. I am not putting quantities on the ingredients below – that depends on how many you want to make. For Rahul and I, we chose one large baguette and cut it in half, then lengthwise. I had half a jar of pizza sauce already in the refrigerator, and I used a few spoonfuls per pizza. We browned half a pound of ground sausage and only enough pepperoni to cover the pizzas. In the end, use as much or as little of each ingredient as you want.
EASY FRENCH BREAD PIZZAS
- French bread baguette
- Pizza sauce
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Ground sausage, browned
- 1 tsp dried oregano
Preheat the oven to 350 and line a baking sheet with foil.
Cut the french bread to the size you want for your pizzas, then cut the bread in half lengthwise. Pull out some of the soft insides of the bread so you create a crevice for your sauce and toppings.
Spoon and spread the pizza sauce onto the french bread. Top with shredded cheese, pepperoni, and browned ground sausage. Sprinkle the oregano on top.
Bake the pizzas for 8-10 minutes or until browned.
