I don’t often title a post with the difficulty level, but this recipe is so stinking easy, you really have no excuse to make it. Three ingredients (if you count water) mean that all you really need is to decide what citrus peel you want to use. I went with Orange.
Funny thing, I’ve never bought candied orange peels before, but I have tried them. They’re sweet, a little chewy, and have an essence of the fruit they used to protect. Usually in small strips, sometimes covered in chocolate, candied orange peels can be quite delicious.
The real reason why I wanted to make my own candied orange peels is that the Martha Stewart recipe was just too easy to pass up, and I loved the look of the orange peels with crystals of sugar hugging them tightly. Hey, food can taste good, but when it looks good it’s even better.
Boiling the peel makes them soft and gives off a wonderful aroma that filled the kitchen. If you ever burn a bag of popcorn or there’s something nasty in the trash can, grab an orange, peel the zest and drop it in some boiling water. I bet it will work like a charm.
After the peels are boiled and dried, you drop them in a simple syrup and let them boil again. Once they cool, they’re all slimy and soft and funny looking. That’s when you roll them in sugar so they shine and become pretty little-candied peels.
