Today’s post is dedicated to The Lunchbox Fun and #feedsouthafrica, a Food for a Cause campaign I am participating in. Last year I dedicated a post for The Giving Table’s Food Bloggers Against Hunger campaign in which we discussed how one family has as little as $4 US dollars to feed their family a day.
The campaign goal? To raise $5,000 to provide a daily meal for 100 South African school children between February 10 – 16. Since 2005, The Lunchbox Fund has been tackling this challenge to feed impoverished and orphaned school children.
But why am I sharing this on Solid Gold Eats? Because I believe everyone should have access to quality, nutritious foods. This is why I volunteer with the Stamp Out Hunger program with the United States Postal Service and why I donate to programs like Gleaner’s Food Bank of Indiana. My impact is on the local level, but The Lunchbox Fund is tackling huger issues in South Africa.
Did you know…
- 65% of all South African children live in poverty. Receiving food encourages these children to stay in school and obtain their education.
- Nearly 20% of all children in South Africa are orphans, with approximately 1.9 Million of those children orphaned as a result of HIV and AIDS.
- Lack of food can diminish concentration, erode willpower, and strip away a child’s potential.
- The Lunchbox Fund identifies schools or forms partnerships with locally based NGOs or community organizations in order to evaluate and identify schools. It funds distributers to buy and deliver food, monitor the feeding scheme, implement a Project Manager, and deliver reports back to them for evaluation.
How you can help
I’ve donated this blog post to generating awareness about the #feedsouthafrica campaign with The Lunchbox Fund, but will you take it a step further? Donate the equivalent of one weekday lunch and help us meet our $5,000 fundraising goal.
Give what you can – I don’t eat a steak entree and shrimp cocktail at every meal, but when I have lunch at a restaurant I typically spend between $10-12. $10 feeds one child through this program.
I’M DONATING $12.00 – WILL YOU JOIN ME?
Here’s what I’m donating – a $11.49 meal at Shapiro’s consisting of half a corned beef on rye with swiss, a side of mac and cheese and a soda.
Or this chorizo burger from Taste Cafe and Marketplace, one of my favorite SoBro lunch spots (about $11.00)
And yes, even these amazingly scrumptilous $7 taco fries from Groovy Guys Fries – is it summer yet?
