I’m back on the Foodie Pen Pals bandwagon! I had to take a break for a bit, with work being busy early in the year and lots of other things going on, I just couldn’t give a pen pal the box they really deserve. What is Foodie Pen Pals, you ask?
Foodie Penpal was created by Lindsey at The Lean Green Bean to connect food lovers with others who love to receive goodies via post mail. Since creation in September of 2011, thousands of people are paired up each month to send each other food items and handwritten notes
This month I received a fantastic box of local goodies from Dan out in Manhattan. The funniest part about us being paired up together is that I had just gotten back from a vacation in Manhattan during the last week of March, and he was actually about to embark on a trip to Indianapolis shortly after we connected via email. Hopefully Dan was able to visit some of my suggestions for great places to eat in our circle city.
So, what did I receive?
Dan put together a really awesome package, knowing that I am much more of a savory person than sweet, but that I enjoy chocolate and it’s unique varieties. I had actually just made some homemade spicy toasted chickpeas, so seeing and tasting the big brown package was a clue that I’m on the right track.
Like I said, I love chocolate, especially those bars you can get with sea salt, bacon, caramel, and other flavors infused into the bar. The cinnamon bar from Madagascar was really tasty, and so were the dark chocolate covered cacao beans. The bacon mints were…. interesting? I shared with Dan my love for bacon, and I commend him for finding something unique.
But, a unique item in the box? Those black squares that are hard to distinguish. Those are licorice caramels. Yes, you read that right – they have the flavor of licorice but the texture of caramels. Very interesting and quite delicious!
I’m not a huge fan of wasabi flavor so I gave the peanuts to Rahul to check out, and he enjoyed them at work with his coworkers. The tropical Brooklyn salsa was also quite interesting and unique, and I couldn’t get enough of it! Thank goodness I had a bag of tortilla chips handy. (aka I have no more tortilla chips because I ate them all).
I can’t wait to get my pairing for May! Interested in the Foodie Pen Pal program? Sign up today! It’s a lot of fun putting together a package for someone else, and then receiving a mystery package of your own!
