Summertime Whiskey Cocktails

I don’t know where you’re at, but in Indiana, we tend to have a short spring followed by a hot and humid summer. That means that we put away the oatmeal stouts and heavy drinks in exchange for blonde ales and light cocktails.

Now, I’m not an expert on cocktails, but I do know that many cocktail recipes make a standard “one drink.” I, however, do not. These recipes are double a standard cocktail, mostly because I’m lazy and I don’t want to make single drinks when I’m home. Hey, just being honest.

For these recipes I used Bulleit Rye Whiskey and George Dickel Rye Whiskey samples that were sent to me. Both have great reviews online and from my secret insider, aka John. He’s my go-to when I have questions about booze, and John definitely helped develop these recipes with me.

These summertime cocktails were made with ingredients we had on hand – lemons, strawberries, sugar and mint. I just planted some grapefruit mint, which promises to have large leaves with it’s sweet taste. I can’t wait to make mojitos and other cocktails with it.

Whiskey Mint Sour

Whiskey Mint Sour

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz Bulleit Rye Whiskey
  • 2 oz simple syrup
  • 2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 mint leaves + more for garnish

Muddle the mint leaves in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Pour the whiskey, simple syrup, lemon juice into it and shake well. Strain into a short glass with ice and add a few extra mint leaves as a garnish.

Strawberry Fields

Strawberry Fields

Ingredients:

  • 2 strawberries
  • 4 oz George Dickel Rye Whiskey
  • 2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 8 mint leaves + more for garnish

Muddle the strawberries and the mint in a cocktail shaker. Add the whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup and shake well. Strain into a short glass with ice and add a few extra mint leaves as a garnish. Then eat the whiskey-soaked strawberries and mint.

Disclosure: I was provided with samples of both whiskeys in exchange for recipe development. These recipes are legit, yo, or I wouldn’t share them with you. Drink up.
