Homemade Peanut Butter and Applesauce Dog Treats

I love my pups, but I’ve never made treats for them before. As I learn to treat myself better through food, I figured I ought to do the same for them, too.

Dollar and Brandy were so excited, it’s almost like they knew what was going into the mixer was for them.

And with it being so close to Valentine’s Day, I just had to use the heart shaped cookie cutter.

Peanut Butter and Applesauce Dog Treats

Peanut Butter and Applesauce Dog Treats

Makes at least 3 dozen treats

  • 1 1/4 cups creamy peanut butter
  • 1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. Not everything will come together well since there’s no egg for binding, so add more applesauce or peanut butter if necessary.

Flour a table or working surface, then begin to roll out the dough. You may want to do it in batches.

Using a cookie cutter, cut out the treats and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone sheet.

Pop em in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until browned slightly. Let cool completely and store in an airtight container or plastic bag.

Those look so good. I make homemade treats for my pup all the time and post the recipes. She loves them and has actually waited by the oven while they were baking. :)

Isn’t it crazy how they know it’s for them? Dollar and Brandy both really liked these. I will go looking for your recipes!

I just started making homemade treats for my dogs – thanks to my friend Anita @4e75a6d6a1e055a50a98300ea5012606:disqus and I have pinned these to make as well!

I never realized how easy and cost effective-not to mention so much better for their health-making treats is! I even make it simpler with 3 big dogs who I cook for a lot. I use Spelt flour which is high protein and easier to digest than wheat.

SIDE NOTE: I actually use Spelt flour in place of wheat flour now. Best fried chicken ever! Add turmeric for a bit of flavour and health, as well as fry in Rice Bran oil.

But my even faster way is 2 cups Spelt Flour, 1 cup Spelt Flakes, 2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter, 2 TBS applesauce and a dash of cinnamon. Add water until moist and I just form teaspoon balls on parchment paper and bake. Never add baking powder or egg, don’t need to roll them out(not as pretty, but they don’t seem to notice) and never have an issue keeping them together. All 3 big finnicky rescues love them!
