Time has gotten the better of me this past weekend, and I’ve been slacking on new projects and successful (and photographable) dinners.
I’ve also been quite busy with evening activities for work.
It doesn’t help when I buy a pizza, either. In some ways I’m slightly upset at myself for not taking each and every opportunity to cook and make something bloggable, but I look back and think of the time I spent paying attention to John and our dogs versus working in the kitchen and realize that I don’t always need to be working.
It took a few days to finish Garlic and Sapphires, so I devoted the hours to that instead of in the kitchen. I also picked up Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver.
Dishes have failed – this spicy parmesan shrimp skillet tasted bland and awkward. Adding parmesan cheese to the marinade was where it went wrong, but I tried following directions anyway to see if it would turn out okay. It did not.
A oatmeal banana loaf was almost a blog recipe, but the second day bite had it’s texture all wrong: mushy and sticky with crunchy oats.
However, the garden is producing well – the monsoon last week really got the green bell peppers going. We probably have 20 to 30 green tomatoes on the vine, but they’re still ripening one per day or so. Jalapeno’s are being picked at 10+ per week, so I bought more half-pint jars and am turning them into garden fresh jalapeno relish.
I’m going to the farmer’s market on Saturday with hopes of finding cheap prices on tomatoes and apples, and maybe more Indiana sweet corn before it’s all gone. Can’t believe how far it is into September already…
