Ever find yourself stuck listening to the same music, over and over again, wishing you could find another artist that is similar in style? Head over to the Gnoosic Music Generator and give your ears some much needed diversity.
John stumbled upon this awesome website and I decided to test it out. I wasn’t impressed by the look of the site, but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, right?
My test was to see if it could a) suggest something that was actually similar in genre or style, and b) suggest a band I didn’t already know.
At first it asks you to type in 3 of your favorite bands. I wrote: Phish, Jamiroquai and Grateful Dead.
Gnoosic suggested Brand New Heavies.
Huh. Well, never heard of them. So, I Spotify-ed them (of course) and listened to “You Are The Universe.” Evidently, this group pioneered the London acid jazz scene. Very groovy, very “80′s” and funky. After listening to a few other songs, I realized that this group should be added to my funk playlist so I could research them more. Right now I’m on the fence. +1 to Gnoosic for picking something new, though!
Before moving on, Gnoosic wants to know if you like it, don’t like it or don’t know if you like it or not. I clicked “I Don’t Know” and its next suggestion was Incognito.
This one I liked much better. I believe I’ve heard them on a Pandora station for Jamiroquai before, which would make sense since Incognito has very similar grooves. The first song I listened to was “Everybody Loves The Sunshine,” which I have heard before in the Summertime mix from DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mic Boogie.
That one passed for “I like it.”
Gnood is the brain behind Gnoosic, and also offers Gnooks for books and Gnovies for movies. It’s similar to my approach for using YouTube’s sidebar of similar videos and Spotify’s similar artists feature. I’ll be back to Gnoosic for more!
