Who wouldn’t want to be this dude?

Music is a huge part of my life. At the age of 3 my parents enrolled me in Midwest Institute of Performing Arts, a really awesome pre-k and Kindegarten school in Terre Haute. This is where I learned to swim, make friends and read music. I started out by playing the piano, which I loved and turned into a hobby that continued until I was in middle school where I picked up the flute.

The skills you learn from reading and playing music greatly contributed to all parts of my life. In college I started a music blog, “Electronic Crack,” where I reviewed electronic music and posted it for download on my site. I used to get so many emails of people asking me to review and post there music, it was like I was this mini-rockstar. Then I graduated and had to get a real job where I lost interest. But I really feel like I wouldn’t have been as good of a student in school or a well-rounded adult had I not been exposed to music of all genres.

My musical interests are still tied to piano in that I listen to a lot of jazz, especially Dave Brubeck, Art Blakey and Horace Silver. I had the opportunity to attend the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Campone summer and it literally changed my life. At the time I had no idea I was sitting on the same piano bench with some of the finest, most talented improvisers in the world who were teaching me what THEY knew. Jazz helped me appreciate soul, blues, rock, punk and electronic music more than what any Justin Bieber song is teaching your children. THINK ABOUT THAT.

The 60s/70s music in this list are all-time favs of mine, ranging from rock to blues, jazz to Motown. You’ll find Janis, Seals & Crofts, Stevie Wonder, the O’Jays, CSNY, Clapton, Beach Boys, The Archies, etc. Have a suggestion? I’d love to know!
